Andy Murray has revealed that he ruptured ankle ligaments in his Miami Open defeat on Sunday and will now require an ‘extended period’ of recovery and rehabilitation.
The Brit called for an injury timeout in the third set of his 5-7 7-5 7-6 loss to Tomas Machac in the round of 32, soldiering on despite painfully rolling his ankle.
Murray has now undergone a scan which has confirmed the severity of his injury, with the issue expected to sideline him for some time – and hamper his plans for a farewell retirement tour this summer.
Writing on Instagram, he said: ‘Yesterday towards the end of my match in Miami I suffered a full rupture of my ATFL [anterior talofibular ligament] and near full thickness rupture of my CFL [calcaneofibular ligament].
‘I will see an ankle specialist when I return home to determine next steps.
‘Goes without saying this is a tough one to take and I’ll be out for an extended period. But I’ll be back with one hip and no ankle ligaments when the time is right.’
The 36-year-old is widely expected to hang up his racket at the end of the summer, but he had wanted to play at Wimbledon one final time and feature at the Olympics – which takes place from July 26 to August 11.

Although Murray has yet to confirm his retirement plans, he has frequently teased that he is coming to the end of his career and said his match against Machac on Sunday would be his last at the Miami Open – a tournament he has won twice previously.
‘[It is] the last match that I am going play here, which is sad, because I love it here,’ he said after Sunday’s defeat.
‘I’ve spent so much of my tennis career here and I would have liked it to have gone on a little bit longer.
‘This tournament particularly for me is an important one so it was a bit more emotional leaving the court today than it might be at some of the other events.
‘I am looking forward to the end now, give my best the next few months and get to be at home with my family.
‘Miami has been a special place for me during my career. It’s been my tennis home really. I’ve done so much of my work and training and preparation here. I love the city.’
Speaking last month, Murray all but confirmed his looming retirement, saying: ‘I don’t plan on playing much past this summer.’
